It funny, if you look at the statistics on Spoccer activity over the years, you see the patterns that emerge. Spring and Summer shows bulges in the numbers of people ready to pull their cleats on. We get our greatest percentage of soccer newbies through the warm months (which of course is awesome) and then the fewest numbers in the winter. Only the die hard players can be found in miserable ice and cold still stubbornly trying to mash the ball through snow and slush towards the goal.

Creating a pickup soccer group sucks ... if you do it wrong. Plain and simple.
At Spoccer.com we put our best foot forward to try and help you create your own pickup group. We provide a cool
How-to guide that outlines what we suggest you do to get numbers for your new group. However it is important to understand that simply joining Spoccer and creating a group isn't enough.
So here is a list of what not to do when creating…

Hear ye, hear ye, all you Richmonders...
SPOCCER IS NOW RECRUITING NEW PLAYERS!There's no denying that 2010 has been a bit of a tumultuous year for Spoccer in Richmond. On top of some serious injuries taking their toll on some die-hard Spoccerites who have been unable to play this season (myself included), we are losing some linchpins of the Spoccer teams (and the men's team, in particular) to various moves and drastic life changes.
Perh…

So I just wanted to mention the
3 v 3 World Tour that is creeping up on us guys. To me it is perfect for Spoccer members as you can get a team put together relatively easy for this (just post a couple comments on the city wall etc). Roster size can be 3 to 6 players ... adult divisions and kids
divisions. In a sense Spoccer players are training for this kind of
thing every day at pickup. :)
As you can see from that…

The Total Football Soccer Show is broadcast in Richmond every Thursday, 12:30 p.m. on
WRIR 97.3, and is co-hosted by three Americans and one Englishman. So you can imagine how much we were looking forward to previewing World Cup 2010 Group C, which features (in alphabetical order so as to avoid any bias) Algeria, England, Slovenia and the USA.

So I was trying to help a friend of mine start a pickup group in Asheville, NC as he had mentioned that the only pickup of which he was aware, was run by a hardy group of people that are hard-core enough to pay for the field every time they play. I think that's cool that they are dedicated to the beautiful game enough to pay, however part of me feels that soccer is kinda like tap water - in that you shouldn't have to pay to play.
I was a little surprised to hear that Asheville was low o…

We took a break from the World Cup focused shows recently to preview the Major League Soccer 2010 season. Not in a nerdy in depth kind of way though, mostly because we don't know all that much about MLS, but approach it as US based fans of the beautiful game who want the league to do well.
Click play below to listen:
The next show will be a p…

Oh well, it only took me 3.5 months to get round to writing part 2! At least in the interim period, my (hardly prophetic) prediction of a new ball for the World Cup came true. But back to this issue of cheating.

Last week we previewed World Cup Group A on the Total Football Soccer Show. So guess what we’re previewing this week? That’s right, it’s the Ukrainian Premier League. Not really. It’s World Cup 2010 Group B.
Once again, your four co-hosts take a team each, and we go through category by category to see who deserves to progress. Expect it’s not all about who has the bes…

Less than three months until World Cup 2010 kickoff, and so the Total Football Soccer Show is previewing the tournament group by group.
Here's the format: We've come up with a highly scientific method for predicting who will qualify from each group. Ignoring things like tactics and team play, we focus on the important stuff like quality of team nickname and hummability of na…

It's a sad day but it looks like we are getting screwed by the man (figuratively speaking thankfully but still ... then I guess it depends on your perspective ... nevermind). Really? After all the effort we collectively put into building pickup soccer in Charleston, we are slowly but surely being strangled out of space to play? This is a seriously crappy situation and something needs to be done!
We have lost the ability to play on the Aquarium fields, which is where we used to play 90%…

American Soccer is perhaps on the cusp of the most pivotal moment in its history. The potential for growth in interest in this country has never been greater.
The NFL and the NBA are staring down the barrel of player lockouts in 2011. Two of the most watched sports leagues, the NBA and the NFL's seasons happen to coincide with the bulk of the European football season, which may give soccer a larger market share in America.
Regardless of how the situation plays out for the other…

Did you know that Richmond has a soccer radio show? Well, it does. In the summer of 2009, Taylor Rockwell and myself persuaded
WRIR 97.3 that there was an audience in Richmond for a weekly soccer show. The existence of Spoccer was one of the examples we used to convince the initially skeptical gatekeepers and we've been broadcasting on 97.3 - Thursday af…

You bet it can! Pickup soccer is a great way for you to build endurance and burn calories. Depending on where you live it might not be possible to play soccer every day. But using pickup soccer directory websites like
Socster.com and
Spoccer.com you can find active pickup soccer games that you can join in and play once or twice a week.
In order to be successful in your weight loss goals you need to exerc…

You know, I searched and searched online but couldn't find much of anything about combining Jiu-Jitsu and soccer. This seemed strange to me, as I think they complement each other quite nicely. You might be asking what the hell do Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) and soccer have in common - well good question.
Most experienced soccer people will tell you it's better to warm up before a game rather than stretch before warming up, before a game. Your muscles aren't ready to stretch if they aren't warmed…

Well, it’s only about eight months until the World Cup, the greatest sporting event on earth and the four year highlight for soccer fans the world over. Which can only mean one thing: deep in FIFA HQ the powers-that-be are getting ready to bugger things up.
Inexplicably the lead up to the World Cup always stirs FIFA to mess around with things. Two changes in particular can be guaranteed – a new type of ball and a new rule.
All major international soccer tournaments now seem to be the designated…

After watching France steal World Cup qualification from Ireland last night, right now I feel pretty disheartened that we will EVER qualify for anything again. I know this feeling will pass obviously and in a few days I'll be ready for the European Cup as our next step but man right now I am pretty disgusted with last night's events.
Two blue shirts were offside and then Thierry Henry handled the ball twice in the box before toeing it to Gallas for a goal. To say that Henry should take the blam…

This one is for Davo, who keeps nagging me to blog
Top 3 stupidest (is that a word?) things soccer commentators say:
3) “That was the best possible start for [Team A]!” Also known as “In their wildest dreams [Team A] could not have imagined a start like this!.”
How often have you seen a team go 1-0 up in the 8th minute, only to hear the commentator say something along these lines? You would have to have a pretty limited imagination if the best start to a game you can imagine is a goal in the…

I'm starting to wonder if I'm the only one that thinks this but Oregon hill just might be dangerous. I mean I played there about 6 months back and rolled my ankle. About 6 months BEFORE that I had rolled the other ankle. Now I know some very cool and talented people play there but I just wonder why people like it so much. Is it because there are goals there? Because of the location?
Oregon hill should be renamed the Oregon Triangle. One third has short grass and bits of stones - another third h…
