Your Pickup Soccer Resource

It's a sad day but it looks like we are getting screwed by the man (figuratively speaking thankfully but still ... then I guess it depends on your perspective ... nevermind). Really? After all the effort we collectively put into building pickup soccer in Charleston, we are slowly but surely being strangled out of space to play? This is a seriously crappy situation and something needs to be done!

We have lost the ability to play on the Aquarium fields, which is where we used to play 90% of our games, and the Maple St field has been reserved 6 days a week for other groups. We have started working on an effort to get people who live within the Charleston City limits to get in touch with their city council members and voice our concerns with the lack of playing areas but is this really enough?

If something isn't done ASAP, we literally won't have any space to play anywhere on the peninsula. I'll keep this post short because it's you the reader I want to hear from. Let's hear the voice of the people (comment below) and see if we can't drum up some concern for a very dire situation.

Charleston city, we need your help ... Save pickup soccer in CHS!

"Waaaaaahhhhhhhh, they're playing soccer on the soccer field." I have never been to Charleston but it seems like there should be many fields to play on?

2 solutions:
1-- the horselot is an option
2 -- there's a nice field next to the miracle league baseball field in West ashley on playground rd...that's a def option

I live on Cool Blow St. and there is a city field on the corner of Cool Blow and Meeting St. It's similar condition to the Maple St. field, and there is never anyone really using the field.

could we offer up some community service hours to the parks and rec people by helping reseed the fields or something to get in better standing with them/to possibly get a permit for the field we'd be taking care of once it grows back?

I can't imagine how they may get rid of us all together. I could honestly understand if they didn't want cleats worn on public fields. That would alleviate a lot of problems. They'll have to ban flag football and frisbee in public parks unless they have permits if they're going to not allow anyone to use a public park. We've had it good for so long, now we just need to do some research to see where to go.

This is terrible. I always brag about Spoccer to my friends back home in North Carolina. Spoccer is a legitimate organization like any other. Why don't we have equal rights to public space?

Even though I only get to play part of the year, I'd hate to see pickup disappear. What are the constraints on a suitable field? For example, are the old Horse Lot or the East Bay playground suitable as alternate locations?
